Rainy Day’s and Monday’s…

dump

This is half of a full-page ad for bump on the back page of this week’s PGN. (I reconfigured their logo myself, though.) For their benefit, it should read:

Saturdays
Buy 1 entree,
get 1 free
(of equal or lesser
value, from 5pm - 10pm)

Tuesdays
Pitcher Nights

I suggest reading Eats, Shoots and Leaves to learn punctuation and the difference between plural and possessive. Someone might want to look into kerning, as well, if their “designer” even knows what that means.

I’m listening to “Silver” from Ocean Rain by Echo and The Bunnymen.

Is that their real logo, or a little of your Photoshop wizardly? Sure looks like "dump" instead of "bump" to me.

Isn't it funny that not even one person noticed this problem before the ads went public? They must all be drinking when it was all conceived and approved.

Bill, I did that on purpose.

It's funny that no one noticed it but sad to me because I used to be a proofreader, a profession that obviously doesn't exist anymore. This was also posted on Phillyist.com and Jillian says they tried to defend it to her. We agreed that they were just wrong.

that definately says "dump". plus those Gs are nigh impossible to read.

I made it say "dump" myself. And, yes, the Gs look like esses, those asses.

The punctuation is not wrong.

In both cases, the day + 's combination can stand for a contraction. Thus, "Saturday is" or "Tuesday is."

Also, in both cases the night's special has a name. Thus Pitcher Night belongs to Tuesday. Likewise, Buy 1 Entree Get 1 Free is the name of the special that belongs to Saturday. Each night claims ownership of the special.

This is a clear case of someone actually using unusual punctuation correctly. It may have been completely unintentional, but it is still accurate.
