Breakfast at Typhaney’s

Typhaney

Phillyist Posted this pic because it said “George Bush is stupid" in the center of the picture. I think they missed the best part.

I’m listening to The Kid With The Replaceable Head by Richard Hell & The Voidoids from “Spurts: The Richard Hell Story.”

Squatters

Squatter DaysSquatter Days is a terrific documentary about Philly squatters which lets them speak for themselves. While it’s sympathetic to the squatters, it allows viewers to think for themselves as well. It’s well worth a mere 26 minutes of your time.

Thanks to Kyle Cassidy on the UC listserv for pointing this out.

I’m listening to Waiting for the Moving Van from “American Gothic” by David Ackles.

Missing

I lost about six months worth of postings, the last ones before my hiatus and name change. Sorry about that but, hey, now I get to use them again if I can remember them!

XOXO

Mark Price

Mark PriceA while back I went up to the South Street Bridge to photograph some of the postering and stenciling there. The steel wall between the sidewalk and the asphalt is covered with all kinds of stuff like an impromptu gallery. The city is starting to paint it over, of course. I took a lot of pictures which I may post eventually.

Anyway, on Saturdays there are always a few people selling things on the corner of 16th and Spruce, a block and a half from here. This week a guy was selling silk-screened prints and I recognized his style from some of the stuff I photographed. His name is Mark Price and his work is really dense and beautiful. He had two sizes of prints for sale but I bought his small hand-made book, the cover of which is shown here. The center band is actually varnish on black, an effect I really love and there is gold metallic ink on every page. It’s a beautifully executed object. I love it. He seems like a nice guy, too.

According to the inside of the book, Mark is a member of Space 1026, a group of artists in Philly who work out of 1026 Arch St. They had an opening on Friday and the group show continues until the end of August. You can find out more here. His name is not on their web site so I’m not sure what the story is.

The Death of Venus (detail)

The Death of Venus

I noticed this disturbing detail yesterday on that mural down the street from my apartment. I guess it’s better than some of the alternatives.

The Death of Venus

The Death of Venus

This monstrosity is but one section part of a multi-part mural on Waverly St. at 15th, about a block from me. It was done by a transgender “artist” Dee something (formerly Wesley something else). It’s right across the street from Peirce College who really want it removed. There are some articles about it in the window of a realtor around the corner. I didn’t have my glasses on and couldn’t really read much of them. I did get that the mural is being given credit for ridding the corner of prostitutes!

I guess Venus is the one with the blood gushing from her throat. I think she’s been killed by the creature in red with the sword in one hand and the giant Lee Press-On nail dangling from the other. The murder looks completely accidental to me.
